Expect more heavy rains, weatherman warns

The heavy rains that pounded most parts of the country is expected to get more severe today, according to an alert issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.
In the alert issued on Saturday, the weatherman had warned heavy rainfall of more than 20mm was in 24 hours in parts of Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Highlands (East & West), Nairobi, and South Eastern Lowlands.
Today, it said the rainfall is expected to intensify to more than 30mm and spread to Northwestern Kenya before it begins to gradually reduce in intensity.
The rains which begun last night persisted until morning.
The counties affected are Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos and Kajiado.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has, meanwhile, urged drivers to exercise extra caution to ensure safety on the roads.
“Avoid flooded roads. What looks like a shallow puddle could be deeper and dangerous than it seems,” it warned.
Several roads and estates experienced flooding following the overnight rains.
Major roads in Nairobi, including Thika Road, Jogoo Road, Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way witnessed traffic snarl-ups in the morning with matatu operators to charge double fares.
