ELOG distances itself from whistle blower John Githongo, says he is not accredited to be observer

Elections Observer Group (ELOG) Kenya, a coalition of civil society, and faith-based organisations, has renounced a video clip by John Mark Githongo that has been making rounds on different social media platforms amid allegations of electoral fraud.

According to ELOG, the ‘whistleblower’ is not a member of the organisation nor an accredited observer.

“ELOG wishes to clarify that the said individual is neither a member of ELOG nor an accredited observer,” part of the public notice statement read.

The organisation has further launched investigations into how the man obtained the jacket with the ELOG logo that he was wearing while speaking with the suspected Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) server hacker.

“We have, therefore, launched an investigation to ascertain how the individual concerned acquired the jacket,” read the statement.

ELOG also reported that it had only allocated the jackets to a special category of independent, non-partisan, and trained roving observers who were members of its leadership team.

The team includes the steering committee, the advisory peace panel, its members and partners on thematic issues, and senior staff.

Githongo, one of Kenya’s most prominent anti-corruption activists, was on the front line of one of the largest large-scale fraud cases ever exposed in the history of the nation.

The activist has submitted a damning affidavit at the Supreme Court in support of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga’s Presidential petition.

Githongo claims that a team of 56 engaged in fraudulent activities to favour president-elect William Ruto to win in the just concluded 2022 General Election.

The activist claims that a whistle-blower confided in him about how he was part of a team that manipulated the presidential results.

Githongo’s affidavit aims to nullify Deputy President William Ruto’s victory in the recently ended August 9 elections after the IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati declared him the winner.

The respondents to the nine petitions filed before the Supreme Court of Kenya registry desk at Milimani Law Courts are Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC commission, and William Ruto.
