Ebola crisis escalate in Uganda as one more health worker succumbs to the illness

The Health Ministry in Uganda has confirmed the death of a health worker from Ebola after battling the disease for seventeen days.

The death raises the total number of fatalities to ten in two weeks after Ebola outbreak was declared.

Confirming the death, Uganda Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero said that the 58-year-old anaesthetic officer died of Ebola earlier today.

“The late Margaret is the 4th health worker we have lost in the current Ebola outbreak after the probable case of the midwife, Dr Mohammed Ali and the health assistant in Kagadi District. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” she said.

This comes after the death of a 37-year-old Tanzanian doctor who succumbed while receiving treatment for the virus.

The total number of cases in Uganda as identified in the East African nation stood at 43 since Monday.

Since the initial outbreak was discovered in the central district of Mubende, infections have been found in Kassanda, Kyegegwa and Kagadi.

President Yoweri Museveni said some nineteen others classified as probable Ebola cases had also died, but were buried before being tested.

Although cases seem to escalate, Museveni has vowed not to impose any lockdowns to tackle the disease saying that there was “no need for anxiety”.

EVD can be transmitted through bodily fluids, with the main symptoms being fever, vomiting, bleeding and diarrhoea.

Transmission can also occur by contact with dead or living infected animals.

Persons infected start showing symptoms after an incubation period of between two and 21 days.
