EACC probing Bomet NEMA director for allegedly receiving Sh25,000 bribe from lodging owner
Ngaanga was arrested later released on Sh30,000 cash bail, pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry
Bomet County director for National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Samuel Kariuki Ngaanga is being investigated by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) after he allegedly solicited and received a bribe of Sh25,000.
Confirming the ongoing inquiry, the anti-graft agency said the director was arrested earlier this week before being freed on a police cash bail after he collected a bribe from a lodging owner in Mulot to allow them to continue with their operations
Ngaanga reportedly demanded to allow the complainant to continue operating a lodging facility in Mulot Township without the required Effluent Discharge Licence and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
EACC received a report of the bribery allegations on Tuesday, and upon preliminary investigations, an operation was conducted that led to the arrest of the suspect within Bomet town while receiving Sh25,000 from the complainant on Wednesday.
The suspect was escorted to Bomet Police Station for interviewing, processing, and statement recording. He was booked for the offences of soliciting and receiving a bribe and later released on Sh30,000 cash bail, pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
EACC reiterated its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points to restore public trust and improve access to quality services for all citizens.
Recently, two officials of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) based in Kirinyaga County were nabbed after receiving a bribe of Sh60,000.
The duo had demanded a total of Sh270,000 from representatives of Jererukizma Holdings Ltd as an inducement to facilitate payment of goods worth Sh2.77 million.
A third suspect, identified as Lawrence Kaara, the NGAAF procurement officer, is currently on the run with the anti-graft agency instructing him to present himself at EACC’s Central regional offices in Nyeri on Monday.
Maina and Wambua were booked at Kerugoya Police Station before being processed at the EACC’s Central Regional Office.
They were later released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 each pending arraignment before the Kerugoya Anti-Corruption Court.
