Duale wants legislators to pass remaining Bills before June 15

The National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale has urged fellow legislators to sacrifice the few remaining days and pass the remaining crucial legislations before June 15.

Parliament has been hit by a major quorum hitch since it resumed on May 9 as most MPs were fighting for tickets during the party primaries.

The house standing orders require parliament to have at least 50 legislators in the chamber before any business can commence.

The same scenario could be witnessed as the official campaign period  which has kicked off and the MPs are fighting to recapture their seats.

Addressing the press in Garissa town  today, Duale said that the house has a few crucial bills that need to be passed including the 2016/17 supplementary budget estimates and the amendments to the standing orders.

“Even though I  understand that the MPs are putting their energy on their re-election, I am appealing to them to sacrifice their time in the next 10 days so that  we burn the mid night oil and make sure that the required legislation are passed by June 15 as we go on recess,” Duale said.

Parliament will be on session until the June 15 but can be recalled anytime before August 8 polls.

Duale heaped praise to 11th parliament saying that ‘it was the only parliament that has enacted more than 100 pieces of legislation during its 4 year term’.

“Under my leadership, that of the speaker and other staff members in the house, this is the only parliament since independence that has fully implemented the constitution 2010,” he said.

“We have taken more than 100 reports, motions and petitions. I am sure whoever is going to write the history of the 11th  parliament, we will go into the history books as a parliament that delivered on its mandate. My credit goes to all 349 honorable members,” he added.
