Duale to release list of unqualified hospitals implicated in NHIF fraud

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has issued a stern warning to unqualified and non-compliant medical facilities, announcing that he is prepared to release a list of shame by June 14. The list will expose facilities previously contracted under the former National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) that are implicated in fraudulent activities.

He also emphasised the ministry’s resolve to crack down on unqualified medical practitioners, urging all players in the health sector to operate within the law. This enforcement, he noted, is central to the ongoing implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The CS was speaking during the official launch of a new collaboration between the ministry of Health and Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). The partnership will facilitate welfare support for surgical cases, including kidney transplants and cardiac surgeries, through the Social Health Authority (SHA). The initiative is aimed at improving access to life-saving care for Kenyans in need.

“This partnership is a key step in reducing catastrophic health costs, especially for the most vulnerable in our communities,” Duale said. “No Kenyan should be denied life-saving treatment because of financial limitations.”

Acknowledging AKUH’s leadership in this effort, the CS called on other healthcare providers—public, private, and faith-based—to adopt similar models, offering subsidized services for SHA beneficiaries. He urged full implementation of the SHA Tariff and Benefits Package, to ensure affordable and seamless access to critical care.

The event was hosted by Aga Khan University leadership, led by President Dr Sulaiman Shahbuddin and AKUH CEO Rashid Khalani.

Duale was accompanied by Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, SHA Chairman Dr Abdi Mohamed and other senior officials.
