Court issues warrant of arrest against MP George Koimburi
The prosecution said that the staged abduction was orchestrated to obstruct Koimburi’s arrest and arraignment at the Kiambu Law Courts, where he was expected to face four land fraud charges
A warrant of arrest has been issued against Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi after he failed to appear in court to face charges relating to staging his abduction in May this year.
In a statement shared by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Koimburi was expected to answer to charges of conspiring to defeat the course of justice in a case involving seven individuals but he failed to appear before the court, prompting the magistrate to issue a warrant for his arrest, along with two other accused persons who were also absent.
The charges stem from the May incident where the lawmaker, alongside Juja Constituency Development Fund Chairperson Peter Kiratu Muhia, Kanyenya-ini Ward MCA Grace Nduta Wairimu, and others, allegedly staged the MP’s abduction in the Mugutha area of Juja.
The prosecution said that the staged abduction was orchestrated to obstruct Koimburi’s arrest and arraignment at the Kiambu Law Courts, where he was expected to face four land fraud charges.
Today, four of the accused, Kiratu, Wairimu, David Macharia Gatana, and Cyrus Keriu Muhia, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi and pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges.
The court granted bail to each of the four accused persons in the amount of Sh300,000, with the requirement that they present three contact persons as sureties.
Meanwhile, Koimburi, along with the sixth and seventh accused, remains at large.
Kiratu faces an additional charge of providing false information to the police and publishing misleading information.
The ODPP detailed that on the day of the alleged abduction, Kiratu falsely reported the incident to an officer at Mugutha Police Station, claiming masked individuals had kidnapped Koimburi after attending a church service.
Separately, the Juja legislator is also accused of publishing false information in a press statement released on June 7 via a YouTube channel while receiving treatment at Karen Hospital.
All the accused persons are expected to appear in court for mention next month.
