Commission moves to court to stop sacking of IEBC officials

A union of independent commission workers has moved to court seeking orders to stop IEBC from sacking CEO Ezra Chiloba and some secretariat officials.

The group wants the officials implicated in the violation of laws which saw the declaration of President Uhuru Kenyatta as winner of August 8 poll nullified.

They want the court to stop the commissions bosses from taking any form of disciplinary action against the officials.

The lot named Immaculate Kassait, James Muhati, Betty Nyabuto, Praxides Tororey and Moses Kipkogey as some the officials they want spared in the purge.

The Kenya Independent Commission Workers Union moved to the Labour and Employment Relations Court on Thursday.

They want the court to issue orders restraining IEBC from commencing any disciplinary action, suspending or interfering with their employment.

Chiloba and the other officials were sidelined in changes made at the secretariat ahead of the October 17 election.

The fresh poll was staged following the Supreme Court’s cancellation of the presidential election held on August 8.

Chairman Wafula Chebukati made the changes when he constituted a new team to oversee the repeat election.
