NGOs champion clarion call for government to tackle unemployment as the world marks Poverty Eradication Day
The National Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) has called upon the government to tackle the high rate of unemployment among the youth and urged all elected leaders to fulfill their election promise.
Speaking during the commemoration to mark the 35th anniversary of the World Poverty Eradication Day, council national chairperson Stephen Cheboi also challenged the youth to be proactive and not wait for white color jobs.
“We plead with the government to make sure they fulfill their promises of coming up with employment strategies for the youth made during the election campaign period.” Cheboi said.
He cited other legal money making ventures such as agriculture and learning of some technical skills as possible alternatives to address the high level of unemployement in the country.
He spoke during a media briefing at his Nyayo House offices in Nairobi.
Similarly, Cheboi urged stakeholders and well-established NGOs at the county level to involve themselves and give their support in poverty eradication initiatives.
“City counties including Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and upcoming city counties should make sure that there are no slums in the near future,” he added.
The Chairperson encouraged partner NGO organizations in the field to collaborate with both national and county governments in efforts to ease the poverty situation nationwide.
On the other hand, council director Catherine Gado cited lack of proper education, inequality, absence of social service and insecurity as possible causes of poverty.
“In access to social service such as clean water can lead to conflict which the brings in security and that in itself breeds poverty. There is also mental poverty we should sensitize ourselves and try to get education to improve ourselves.” She added
The youth have been urged to take advantage of the 50 billion hustler promised by the government to start money making ventures.
Poverty eradication is in line the Sustainable development goal number one.
