Gachagua, Kalonzo lead UAG onslaught against Ruto in Kitui
Leaders of the United Alternative Government (UAG) have today, Thursday, April 23, 2026 intensified their criticism of President William Ruto’s administration during the second day of their “meet the people” tour in Kitui County, accusing the government of failing to address key issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
The delegation, led by former Vice President and Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizen Party (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua, used the stopover to rally support while highlighting what they termed as governance failures, particularly in the health and education sectors.
Gachagua strongly defended teachers over the transition of their health insurance scheme to the Social Health Authority (SHA), which he claimed is dysfunctional and has left many educators struggling to access medical services.
He further alleged that the teachers’ union had been compromised and was no longer effectively advocating for its members.
The former Deputy President also condemned the increasing cases of violence linked to organised groups, accusing the government of tolerating the use of “goons” to intimidate critics and invade private property.
Addressing residents at Kalundu Market, Gachagua urged locals to remain steadfast as the country heads towards the next general election.
“To the people of Kalundu Market, we sincerely appreciate your resilience and unwavering focus as you prepare for positive change. Our mission is to keep our supporters informed about the progress of our nation, and I am confident that the people of Ukambani are aware and ready to make informed decisions in the upcoming general election,” Gachagua said.
The UAG tour, which has seen opposition leaders traverse different regions to engage directly with citizens, is expected to continue tomorrow, Friday, April 24, 2026 with a visit to the Coast region as the coalition seeks to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed Gachagua’s sentiments, warning that the country risks international scrutiny if political violence continues unchecked.
He cautioned that President Ruto could face action at the International Criminal Court if the alleged use of violence persists.
Kalonzo also framed the UAG movement as a growing national force, saying the turnout in Kitui reflected a broader desire for political change.
“The numbers, the energy, the fire in your eyes—you didn’t just attend a rally; you declared that ukombozi is a mission. Kitui is awake and Kenya is watching. This is a people’s movement built on hope, rooted in justice, and driven by the desire for a better Kenya for all of us,” he said.
DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, on his part, warned against granting President Ruto a second term, describing such a move as potentially disastrous for the country.
