Cabinet approve additional Sh4billion towards drought mitigation
The Cabinet has approved the appropriation of Sh4billion to help in the ongoing efforts to mitigate the current persisting drought in the country.
Through a cabinet dispatch, cabinet said the funds will play a big part in shielding vulnerable households and children.
“The Cabinet also received a status report on the ongoing drought as well as the support being rendered to vulnerable households and schoolgoing children through the school feeding program,” read a despatch from the cabinet
“In that regard, Cabinet approved the appropriation of a further Sh4 billion to the nation’s drought alleviation programme,” the dispatch added.
The move was arrived at during a cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto yesterday.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) yesterday announced that it will donate Sh16billion as additional food assistance to Kenyans affected by the severe drought in the country.
USAID said that it will provide emergency food items such as sorghum, maize, yellow split peas and vegetable oil for families living in areas where local markets are not functioning.
The decision was arrived at following a visit to the country by US First Lady Jill Biden.
According to USAID, the ongoing drought leaves more than four million people in the grips of a dire hunger crisis, with the number expected to rise to over five million by June.
