Azimio to contest House majority ruling, urge government to reconsider lifting of GMO ban
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stated that the Azimio One Kenya Alliance will contest National Assembly speaker Moses Wetangula’s ruling on House majority.
The former Vice President while addressing a few issues at the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) command center in Karen noted that the decision by Wetangula caused disharmony in the country.
“We are going to court to go against that ruling of my friend, Wetangula. He’s still my friend even though he occasions disharmony in the country. He knows it, so we’re ruling against that so we don’t do certain things. So Wetangula please, don’t be manipulated. You’re my friend and we have history from the times we were tear-gassed together. Don’t forget your friend. We must stand for what is truthful and just in this country,” Kalonzo said.
Still on the same breath Kalonzo called on President William Ruto to reconsider the lifting of the ban on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
While speaking to the press, Kalonzo said that food security should not be premised on maize consumption alone, urging church leaders to condemn the lifting of the ban and speak against introduction of GMOS in the country.
“When the President was Minister for Agriculture, he was vehemently opposed to GMOs as I am. I’m calling on the President to reconsider the lifting of the ban for the sake of the country,” Kalonzo added.
Ruto, last week lifted the ban on genetically modified crops that was imposed in 2012.
He said it followed recommendations of the Task Force formed to Review Matters Relating to GMOs and Food Safety.
The President added that the move was meant to plug the food deficit experienced in the country especially maize which Is the country’s staple food.
