Four police officers perish in Garissa road accident

Four police officers lost their lives an two others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident along the Garissa Highway yesterday evening.

Reports indicates that the six were traveling in a police vehicle attached to North Horr Police Station, which is alleged to have been speeding leading to the driver losing control.

It is after that the vehicle rolled several times, killing the four while the two were left with serious injuries.

A police report said the four died at the spot of the tragic incident.

Those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

The tragic accident comes weeks after two police officers were fatally injured when the police car they were traveling in collided with an oncoming trailer at the Matisi area along Webuye Bungoma road.

The two, Sammy Ng’eno and who was driving the car, and his colleague Samuel Yego, died on the spot.

The duo was headed to Bungoma from Webuye when they met their untimely death.

The rifles that the two were armed with were safely recovered from the scene of the accident.

“Due to the impact, our officers sustained multiple body injuries and died on the spot, but their two rifles are safe. Scene visited sketched, and the bodies were moved to Webuye Sub County Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy,” the report by the police stated in part.

The impact of the crash was devastating, with the police vehicle suffering severe damage after smashing into the trailer.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene but were unable to save the officers.

Statistics released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in the first quarter of this year indicate an increase in road crashes compared to the same period last year.

The Authority indicated that 3,581 fatalities were recorded from June 2024 to March 2025, a 10 per cent increase compared to the 2023/24 financial year.

8,874 Kenyans incurred serious injuries, while 5,620 sustained slight injuries from road accidents.
