The Law Society of Kenya today unveiled the plaque bearing the image of slain lawyer Willie Kimani in commemoration of his anniversary.
LSK president Isaac Okero led a team of society Council members mark the ceremony in the newly established serenity corner within LSK headquarters.
“Today, we and the council members have gathered here at the LSK serenity corner to mark the unveiling of a plaque in memory of our colleague Willie Kimani who died slightly a year ago as a hero of justice. This shows LSK’s commitment in advancing the course of justice.” Okero said.
Okero announced the purple ribbon week will end on Friday when they will present a memorandum to the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet over alleged police extra judicial killings and cases of forced disappearances.
Beginning tomorrow, some LSK members will set up tents at the headquarters grounds to offer pro-bono services to victims of extra judicial killings to document the cases to form part of the memorandum to be presented to the police boss.
Senior Counsel Cheptoo Masai who also double as LSK Council Member was also present.
Kimani’s body and the other two were found dumped in the same river following morbid killings.
So far, four Administration Police Officers have been charged in court in connection with the deaths. They are Senior Sergeant Fredrick Leliman, Corporal Stephen Chebulet and Constable Silvia Wanjiku Wanjohi and Sergeant Leonard Maina Mwangi.
Last week, Okero cited last year’s Amnesty International report that ranked Kenya as the top country with cases of police shootings and killings targeting civilians.
According to the report, out of the 177 cases of extrajudicial killings reported in Africa, 122 cases occurred in Kenya.
LSK maintained many cases of unexplained disappearance were reported at Coastal region under the guise of fighting terrorism and insurgent Al Shabaab terror network.
