Nairobi County Government today ordered outdoor advertising firms to remove all banners and billboards mounted by politicians during the just concluded second phase of Mass Voters Registration.
The firms risk being fined between Sh50,000-Sh300,000 for mounting the advertising materials without approval of Nairobi County Government.
County Chief Administrator John Ntoiti warned of heavy penalties against politicians found culpable of the misconduct.
According to the the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the official campaign period starts on June 28 and ends on August 6, 2017.
“We would like to remind politicians that the campaign period has not begun,”said the chief officer. A spot check by The People Daily showed that campaign billboards and banners of President Uhuru Kenyatta, Governor Evans Kidero and aspirants for various seats have been erected at strategic places.
Ntoiti also warned politicians against making inflammatory remarks saying the risk being arrested and charged for being a public nuisance and incitement.
City residents are tired of retrogressive politics propagated by selfish leaders. “Politicians using vernacular language to seek for votes will be charge with public nuisance,”said Ntoiti.
