Drivers who operate from other Counties to Kisumu town are forced to produce their voter’s cards before being allowed to use toilets.
They said a group of youth move around the bus stage to monitor people who have not been registered as voters demanding to see their voters cards.
“You can not be allowed to use a toilet at Kisumu bus stage before producing a voters card whether a driver or a passenger,” they said.
In an exclusive interview with People Daily in Busia, the drivers alleged that even passengers are asked to produce their voter’s cards at different stages before they are allowed to board vehicles citing the Kisii stage.
“We are undergoing untold harassment at Kisumu town because you cannot be allowed to use a toilet without producing your voter’s cards by youth who move round to monitor people who have not been registered as voters,” said one driver on condition of anonymity fearing to be victimized.
They said that the situation at Kisumu bus stage was causing fear among drivers who operate from other counties because it was creating fear even among innocent people especially those who don’t come from Nyanza region.
The drivers appealed to the government to ensure that every Kenyan enjoys his or her democratic right according to the constitution instead of being harassed by few individuals who go to an extent of wiping others for failing to produce a voter’s card.
“Let everybody enjoy his or her democratic right according to the constitution instead of being harassed by few individuals who go to an extent of wiping others for no reason due to not producing a voter’s card,” they said.
They appealed to the government to intervene over the matter in order to curb the situation that might end up causing anxiety among innocent people in the area before the August 8th general elections.
