President William Ruto has promised three months’ rent and Sh10,000 stipend to each family displaced by floods Mathaare and Kiamaiko in Nairobi.
Ruto made the remarks today when he toured the area to assess the flooding situation and check on the affected families who have been displaced by rains.
He said the money and three months’ rent is a short term solution as the government soughts for a permanent solution.
“There are 40,000 households affected during the evacuation for safety reasons. Every household will receive Sh10,000 to look for alternative housing. We will give them the money for their 3-month rent as the Government looks for another alternative.” Ruto stated.
Mathaare is among the areas adversely affected by floods in Nairobi as lives and properties have been lost.
Earlier today, Nairobi South Member of County Assembly appealed to the national government to help those whose houses were demolished for being on reparian land with shelter and food.
“Those whose houses have been demolished have nowhere to go. I am calling upon the president to go. Let them be helped even if it means paying for them one month rent and being given food.” Waithera stated.
The legislator stated that she supports the demolition but the corruption being experienced in some areas are faced with corruption as some people are being requested to pay.
“I want to request president Ruto to initiate investigations because those doing the demolition are asking Sh10000 from every household. The people are suffering a lot and a good example is Shimo la Tewa area in South B where some of the houses have been left and due to corruption.” She stated.
Countrywide, at least 230 people have lost their lives due to the ongoing heavy rains and resultant floods across the country.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said yesterday said that floods left 164 others injured and 72 people are missing.
