President William Ruto has today shocked the nation as he splashed Sh10million cash gift to twelve-time Football Federation of Kenya (FKF) Premier League champions AFC Leopards as they marked 60 years of existence at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
President Ruto delivered what was an erstwhile promise, handing over the money in cash to Ingwe chairman Dan Shikanda.
Other leaders present also added on to the Head of State’s kitty, with Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and governors Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) adding Sh2million each, Ken Lusaka (Bungoma) and Simba Arati (Kisii) adding Sh1million each respectively.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna also added on to the birthday goodies for Ingwe.
“I am a small man your excellency so I will not mention the millions you guys have. Yesterday I gave my donation of Sh250,000.” Sifuna said.
President Ruto watched a game pitting AFC’s immediate former players against Spanish amateur side Ramassa, who were invited as part of the birthday celebrations.
“I feel honoured to be here celebrating this great day with you, Ingwe fans. The history of Kenya, and Kenyan sport cannot be complete without the mention of AFC Leopards. As a government, we will remain committed to putting Kenya back on top in matters sports.” President Ruto said.
“Sports is a key component of the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and I want to reiterate my commitment and that of the government.” Ruto added.
AFC, one of the oldest and most followed football clubs in Kenya has had activities all week, celebrating their birthday, and it culminated in various matches at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Earlier in the day, the Leopards main team played against Shabana and Gor Mahia FC, both matches ending 1-1, while their legends also faced Gor’s legends
