Kenya, Mozambique commit to strengthen bilateral relations on trade and security cooperation
Kenya and Mozambique yesterday signed seven Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) on various areas of cooperation, including mutual legal assistance, diplomatic training, public service training, investment promotion, Blue Economy, and mutual recognition of driving licenses.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, president William Ruto said the Kenya-Mozambique relations stand on a strong pedestal of trade and investment.
“Kenya celebrates the long-standing warm and cordial relations between the two countries.” President Ruto said.
President Ruto spoke after he held bilateral talks with President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi in Maputo, Mozambique.
The President explained that between 2018 and 2022, imports from Mozambique increased from Sh3.2billion to Sh5.2billion, while Kenyan exports to Mozambique only increased from Sh1.2billion to Ks1.4billion over the same period.
“In this burgeoning win-win relationship, Mozambique has the upper hand in trade balance terms, yet the opportunities before us take the form of a tide that will lift both our boats.” Ruto added.
He also noted that his administration is committed to strengthen ties between Nairobi and Maputo to enhance trade volumes that remain relatively low.
Ruto is on a two-day State Visit is in the company of First Lady Rachel Ruto, Attorney General Justin Muturi, Cabinet Secretaries Alfred Mutua (Foreign Affairs) and Aden Duale (Defence) among others.
The president lauded the agreements signed, for instance in the area of security saying the stability of countries is front and center of any meaningful nationhood.
“Signing of the agreements on defense and security is significant because we are dealing with the challenge of violent extremism, terrorism, and organized crime in our region. Sharing of experiences will make our teams better prepared.” Ruto noted.
The president observed that no meaningful development can take place in an environment that is not secure or in a space that is not stable.
On behalf of Kenya, he assured his host that he was “looking forward to cooperation in this space so that we can get rid of terrorists and criminals who are impeding our progress.” He added.
