Gor Mahia FC has clinched the 2022/23 Footbal Kenya Federation Championships after thrashing Nairobi City Stars to win 4-1 and sealed a record-extending 20th FKK Premier League title at the Kasarani Stadium this afternoon.
After a dry first half, Samuel Kapen gave City Stars a surprise 1-0 lead in the 48th minute before Benson Omalla scored a record equaling 26 goal of the season to restore parity for K’Ogalo.
Omalla not only moved level with Kenya Police’s Elvis Rupia but also matched Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Ochieng 47-year-old goal scoring record of 26 goals achieved in 1976 with Gor.
Gor entered the final day leading the defending champions Tusker by a point and needing victory away at City Stars to guarantee success at the end of a deeply competitive season.
Tusker got the job done with a 4-0 thrashing of Vihiga Bullets but their effort still left them a point shy as they surrender the league title for the first time since 2020.
Tusker FC showcased their class by thrashing hosts Vihiga Bullets 0-4 in their last FKF premier league match this Season that was staged at Mumias Sports Complex kakamega County.
Tusker went ahead in the 4th minute of the first half when their bully striker Deogratius Ojok headed in Siwa Shaphan cross.
Shami Mwinyi curled in the second goal with his right foot in the 44th minute to hand the visitors a comfortable lead.
Tusker coach Robert Matano made several changes in the second period and it payed off when striker Stewart Omondi scored a brace in the 83rd and 86th minute respectively to hand the three points to the brewers.
After the match Matano said they won the game but lost the championship to Gor Mahia who won 4-0 again Nairobi city stars.
“we slept when we lost points against Wazito FC and Posta Rangers, that’s when we lost the league, but all is not lost we are now going to focus on the league cup finals against Kakamega Homeboyz.” He said.
His counterpart the Vihiga Bullets Coach Milton Kidiga said his boys played well but lost to a good team.
