The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has condemned yesterday’s torching of UDA party offices by protestors in Siaya county.
The Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu stated that the attacks were unacceptable and went against the principles of making sound political choices warning that the trend might lead to a culture of political intolerance.
“We are disturbed by these acts of violence that may potentially lead to a culture of political intolerance and offend the tenets of multi-party democracy. These acts claw back the gains of democracy,” said Nderitu.
She said the vandalism violates Article 38 of the Constitution which guarantees the right for political parties to open and operate offices anywhere in the country.
“The attack on political party offices is unacceptable and goes against the principles of making sound political choices. These acts claw back the gains of democracy,” she said.
She called on organisers of the mass protests to restrain their supporters from violence as they exercise their right to demonstrate under Article 37 of the Constitution.
She called on the planners of the demonstrations to take the lead in ensuring their supporters do not propagate violence and further urged stakeholders to observe fidelity to the Political Parties Act, 2011 and desist from all forms of violence.
