The teachers’ fraternity is now demanding inclusion in the yet to be established taskforce to review the implementation of the controversial Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) as promised by President William Ruto.
During his inauguration, Ruto stated that he would appoint a committee to review the CBC in a weeks’ time.
Teachers now want to be represented as key stakeholders before the taskforce embarks on it mandate.
They demanded that representatives drawn from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers(KNUT) and Kenya Union of Special Needs Teachers (Kusnet) be included in the taskforce.
West Pokot County KNUT representatives said that the previous government pressured the installation of the CBC, but the teachers were not well familiar with it.
“CBC is not there, it is only drama in class. Some things are not practical. CBC has a problem, it was rushed,” he said.
Teachers want the group to focus on teacher preparation, secondary school enrollment and parental involvement in curriculum development.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Missori said that the taskforce would provide a forum for airing public opinions on CBC.
KUPPET observed that the adoption of CBC systems has come across certain obstacles that must be solved for the curriculum to prosper.
The President also promised to address the double transition of Grade 6 and Grade 8 students to secondary schools.
