Maureen Anyango, the woman who was allegedly neglected at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, died of heavy bleeding and increased intracranial pressure (ICP).
According to a post-mortem done yesterday, the cause of death was post-partum haemorrhage which was brought about by pulmonary oedema.
“As a result of my examination, I formed the opinion that the cause of death was raised intracranial pressure, pulmonary oedema, pre-eclampsia and post-partum haemorrhage,” stated government pathologist Dorothy Njeru.
The 28-year-old pregnant woman bled furiously after giving birth to twins at the medical centre.
According to sources, on September 7, Maureen began bleeding at 9 am after giving birth to two healthy babies.
However, the hospital workers’ response to the emergency appeared sluggish, necessitating the intervention of her family members, who later decided to transfer her to Kiambu Level 5 hospital to save her life, but she died at around 8 pm.
Maureen’s sister Rose Otieno asserted that her water broke on Monday at around 7 pm.
“When we got to the hospital, medics expressed concern that her pressure was high, but they agreed to admit and stabilize her,” Maureen’s sister stated.
Her death prompted Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja to make an impromptu visit to the facility amid ballooning pressure on his administration to crack the whip on inattentive medics.
Expressing his dismay at the condition of the facility, Sakaja promised to improve operational efficiency.
