On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) at the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet, Nakuru County.
The institution, which is a one of a kind in East and Central Africa, will be the centre of military training in the area and the country at large.
The president stated that the organisation would be fundamental in enhancing security in the country as it would serve as an educational centre for training security personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). The Head of State said this during the commissioning ceremony of the university.
“The National University will act as a national think-tank and shall play an active role in transforming our peace and national frameworks for posterity. The establishment of the university with its objectives to promote a high-quality learning experience will go a long way in strengthening Kenya’s position not only as an education hub but also a centre for security training,” Uhuru said.
In his statement, the president described the big significance of the project as it brings together specialised colleges and will be run by national security organisations.
The Head of State, who also happens to be the Chancellor of the NDU-K was pleased that the institution of higher learning had joined the ranks of a few international universities mandated to offer high-quality security-related training and education programmes.
The National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) is the first university in the country to offer cutting-edge undergraduate and postgraduate studies in security-related courses and also the first public institution to be established under Section 24 of the Universities Act 2012 as an entity of national strategic importance.
