The United Kingdom trade representative in Kenya Theo Clark has resigned from his position as a trade representative to Kenya over allegations that Prime Minister (PM) Boris Johnson supported and promoted a colleague with a history of sexual misconduct.
Chris Pincher, a fellow lawmaker, was elevated to a position providing pastoral care for MPs despite previously being under investigation for allegations of wrongdoing.
“To learn that you chose to elevate a colleague to a position of pastoral care for MPs, whilst in full knowledge of his own wrongdoing, shows a severe lack of judgment and care for your Parliamentary party. I was shocked to see colleagues defending the government with assurances that have turned out to be false. This is not the way that any responsible Government should act,” she said.
Theo contends that this reveals the PM’s continuous lack of discretion and concern for the government.
She pointed out that the episode is especially severe since after being made aware of allegations of misbehaviour, the PM continued to support the disgraced MP.
Clark noted that although she had left her post, she was proud of the fact that she had carried out her responsibilities in it with diligence.
Two other senior ministers resigned yesterday, joining Clark in saying they could no longer put up with the scandalous culture that has followed Johnson for months.
Yesterday evening, Sajid Javid resigned as health secretary and Rishi Sunak resigned as finance minister.
Following the resignations, Johnson will participate in two crucial parliamentary debates today.
