The Deputy President equation in the Raila-led coalition continues to be a headache with the entry of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
This is after the Jubilee party proposed the two names yesterday in a closed-door session at the KICC.
A seven-member committee will spearhead the deliberations to get who fits the bill and forward two names to Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta for the final decision.
The three main parties in the coalition, ODM, Jubilee, and Wiper, have two members each, while small parties have one nominee each.
Apart from the obvious options in the public domain of Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Peter Kenneth, the council will be considering Joho and Munya.
This recent turn of events has been termed a dead-end to Kalonzo’s ambition of deputising Raila with MPs allied to him, terming the move a betrayal.
“We agreed to support Raila because Kalonzo would be the running mate. Some people within ODM have been trying to frustrate that.
There is no other reason we would have agreed (to join Azimio),” said Dan Maanzo.”Now it is no Kalonzo, no Raila”
The leaders insist that Raila and the President were not keeping their word to make Kalonzo the automatic Azimio second-in-command.
Junet, who is secretary-general of the Azimio One Kenya Coalition, said that the decision would ensure that the Raila-led team would win the elections.
The IEBC has given political parties up to April 28 to name their running mates.
