The security apparatus has been allocated Sh317.8 billion. Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani allocated 317.8 billion out of the 3.3 trillion proposed budget for financial 2022/2023.
The funds outlined in the CS Yatani budget will be disbursed to the different arms of Internal Security, National Defence, and the National Intelligence Service.
CS Yatani assured Members of Parliament that the money allocated would go a long way in supporting operations in the security sector and ensure that security is enhanced accordingly.
“The security of our nation remains paramount and must be maintained to safeguard the considerable development gains,” he said.
The estimates indicate that In the proposal, Sh128.4 billion will go to the Ministry of Defence, Sh46.4 billion to the National Intelligence Service and Sh122. 2 billion to the police and prison services.
Below is a list of how the money has been allocated.
– Sh128.4 billion will go to defence.
– Sh46.4 billion for NIS and Sh102.2 billion for police and prison services.
– Sh10.7 billion for leasing of police motor vehicles and Sh1billion for the police modernisation programme
– Sh1 billion for National Communication System.
– Sh335 million for the national forensic laboratory.
– Sh4.8 billion for the insurance of police service and prison officers.
– Sh2.3 billion for Group personal insurance for police service and prison
– Sh1 billion for the National Integrated Management System.
Yatani pointed out that the government has made deliberate efforts to ensure that all Kenyans are safe by complying with the United Nations recommendation of 1 police officer for every 450 citizens, saying that Kenya has reduced the ratio from 1 police officer to 1,000 to 1 police officer to 462 citizens.
The security budget has increased from 294.5 billion in 2021/2022 to 317.8 in 2022/2023. Some of the key areas that the government is dealing with include terror threats from Al Shabaab, among other forms of crimes.
