Police in Trans Nzoia County are looking into love triangle as possible motive in the murder-suicide incident of two police officers at Kiungani Police Station in Kiminini.
Constable Dorcas Chebet, 27 and her husband Alex Andari 28, died of gunshot wounds in their house on Sunday morning.
Detectives who checked their last communications established that Andari had previously accused his wife of infidelity and had contemplated murder at one point.
Texts messages also indicated that he enticed her to come for a new phone as a surprise.
Andari is said to have confiscated Chebet’s phone on suspicion that she was having an affair.
He took his wife’s phone promising to return it the next morning after completing his investigations.
Police believe that Andari was interested in exposing the affair and blocking any further communication between the suspected two lovers.
However, Chebet did not wait for the phone to be brought back, she headed to her husband’s workplace at 10am where she proceeded with Andari to his place a few metres away.
At around 11.30am, gunshots were heard from the house.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander, Jecinta Wesonga confirmed that Chebet visited Wandari at Kiungani police station less than 10 kilometres from her station at around 10.30 am.
“After an hour or so, officers said they heard a gunshot. About 10 minutes later, they heard another, then the third shortly after,” she said.
Witnesses said Chebet followed Andari to the house and they locked themselves therein.
Preliminary findings indicate that Chebet shot Andari in the chest before turning the G3 rifle on herself.
According to the police report, Chebet used her husband’s gun to shoot him twice in the stomach before turning the weapon to herself.
Crime scene assessment reports indicated that Andari tried to crawl to safety, leaving palm prints on the wall.
Chebet was found lying next to a plastic chair with a bullet hole on the head.
Many police officers have in the past year been killed and injured in similar circumstances.
Last year Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said the government was crafting stringent rules to curb cases of sexual harassment and killings in the police service.
He said a team had been formed to come up with rules that will guide relationships in the National Police Service.
He said among others, the move is aimed at addressing rising cases of sexual harassment and killings in the service.
