The United Democratic Alliance Chairman Johnstone Muthama now wants the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to disqualify Orange Democratic Movement from participating in 2022 polls over chaos.
Muthama has accused the ODM Party of being behind the stoning of the Deputy President William Ruto’s campaign entourage at Kondele, Kisumu County.
In a statement, Muthama says the stoning is a wake up call to the institutions charged with ensuring a peaceful election and transition next year.
“It’s a day that reminded peace loving Kenyans that the dark days of ‘KANU Zones’ when opposition political parties were barred from campaigning in some parts of the Country are far from over,” he said.
The former Machakos senator refuted police statement that stated the DP had been warned of possible violence if he stoped at Kondole area.
“The question that police should answer is when did they know of the chaos and what did they do about it to ensure the stoning does not happen and it is stopped,” read the statement.
He accused the Kenya Police and the National Cohesion and Integration Committee of failing in their mandate saying the incident comes in the wake of another incident where ODM Presidential candidate Jimmi Wanjigi was stoned in Migori.
He said NCIC has been a lethargic entity and should have by now arrested an emerging pattern where certain politicians are using words that can be construed to incite Kenyans.
Meanwhile, MPs affiliated to UDA condemned the incident saying DP Ruto has a right to tour each part of the Country without fear and intimidation.
In his second day of his tour of the Nyanza region to campaign for his presidential bid, Ruto ran into a section of the youth who started chanting Raila’S slogans.
Local residents were seen hurling stones at the deputy president’s convoy triggering a clash with police officers who battled to contain the situation.
Anti-riot police officers were forced to lob teargas canisters, forcing the rowdy youth, that had thronged the area scampering for safety.
Ruto accused his rivals of hiring youth to throw stones saying Kisumu is also Kenya.
