President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed four new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioners a day after the Parliament approved them.
The four Juliana Whonge Cherera, Francis Mathenge Wanderi, Irene Cherop Masit, and Justus Abonyo Nyang’aya are now waiting to be sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
In a Gazette notice the National Assembly approved the report of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, which cleared the four nominees forwarded by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Chairing the committee, Kangema Member of Parliament Muturi Kigano said the four have exhibited impressive knowledge of topical issues, including the administration and management principles required to address challenges facing the electoral agency.
“I plead with the House to approve the nominees so that the commission can be fully constituted in readiness for the General Election next year,” he said.
The four will replace Dr Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat and Consolata Maina who resigned in 2018.
The IEBC has been operating with just the chairman and two commissioners for three years.
