Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops have called for the Constitution of Kenya Amendment process to be carried out after the 2022 general elections.
According to the Catholic bishops, it was untenable to hold a referendum and a general election which is 437 days away.
“We propose that to ensure a democratic, constitutional and inclusive process that is based on law and dialogue, far-reaching constitutional amendments should only be addressed after 2022 General Elections,” said the conference Chairman Rev. Martin Kivuva.
They added that Kenyans should pursue, through Parliament, some essential reforms to ensure peaceful, progressive and a prosperous country in the led up to after 2022 Genera Elections.
On the appointment of the High Court and Court of Appeal judges, the bishops wants the recruitment of four IEBC commissioners expedited and a speedy resolution of the stalemate revolving around the appointment of 40 judges.
This comes days after Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga expressed confidence that the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) will overcome the legal setback in due course.
Addressing a large crowd at Kondele in Kisumu County yesterday, Raila stated that the journey to Canaan was unstoppable expressing optimism that the proponents of the BBI process will soon register a major victory.
“… I told you that the journey to Canaan will face many challenges and that is just one of them,” he asserted.
IEBC and BBI secretariats had filed a notice of appeal seeking the High Court to suspend its decision on the judgement it issued on the BBI Bill.
However, Attorney General withdrew his application because he wished to move to the Court of Appeal to seek the the same reliefs.
“…the Hon. Attorney-General hereby withdraws his Notice of Motion
Application dated 14th May, 2021 as he is desirous of invoking the concurrent
jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal to seek similar reliefs,” read the notice.
