Protests at Njoro campus after female student attacked

Egerton University students went on the rampage on Monday evening after one student was attacked at the Njoro campus hostels.

The female student was attacked with a panga and with details surrounding the attack still scant even as her colleagues demanded that the suspects be arrested.

The administration is yet to comment on the incident.

The victim was rushed to hospital as tension remained high at the institution.

The university administration and police are still trying to piece together details regarding the incident.

Videos circulating online show students gathered at the gate where they lit a bonfire. They complained about rising insecurity in the institution and immediate interventions.

A manhunt has been launched for the suspects even as the identity of the culprits still not yet clear.

Just this week, students at Maseno University also demonstrated after the death of Boaz Zachary, a third-year student who was allegedly attacked and severely injured by unknown individuals outside the campus.

The deceased who worked part time as a boda boda rider, was killed and his motorbike stolen by the assailants.

Angry students protested outside the Maseno Police Station, located 100 metres from the university, accusing  security officers of failing to arrest the suspects.

They blocked the Kisumu-Busia highway forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

Police officers were forced to lob tear gas canisters at the protesters in a bid to disperse them.

However, the adamant learners vowed to continue demonstrating until their demands were met.

The institution has faced its fair share of insecurity in the past with worried students calling for increased patrols in and around the university.
