Six KNH employees charged with stealing cancer drugs

Six Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) employees have been charged at the Milimani Law courts for stealing cancer drugs from their employer.

Emily Nyambura, Phillip Owino, Mary Mumo, Yvonne Muthoni, Rose Jepkogei and Maureen Adongo are said to have colluded to craft a plan to steal medication meant for cancer patients.

The six allegedly stole the said medications from Kenyatta Prime Care Centre pharmacy valued at more than Sh9 million.

They pleaded not guilty and were released on a cash bail of Sh500, 000 or a bond of Sh1million.

Chief Magistrate Wendy Muchemi directed their lawyer to file a formal application after they challenged the charge sheet that has been stamped by Kenya police.

This is not the first time a nurse has been accused of stealing drugs from the hospital.

Late last year a 53-year-old KNH nurse was charged with stealing medicine worth Sh81, 600 from the hospital.

Joseph Onyango Joel Migundo was accused that on diverse dates between October 26, 2021, and December 9, 2021, at KNH.

They were both accused of stealing 12 bottles of Human Albumin Solution, all valued at Sh81,600, a property of KNH.

The drugs allegedly came into his possession by virtue of his employment at KNH.

The nurse was also facing an alternative charge of handling stolen property.

It’s alleged that on December 9, 2021, at the KNH hospital, he was found in possession of 4 bottles of the said drug believed to have been stolen property of the hospital.

Migundo denied the charges before Nairobi Senior principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi and was released on a cash bail of Sh50,000.
