Senate Speaker to halt House conflict
The differences between the National Assembly and the Senate that has existed for several years will soon be over, this is according to the Senate speaker Amason Kingi.
In an address to the Senators, Kingi made this assurance while sensitizing on the need for senators to have a funds kitty that will enable them conduct their work of oversighting devolved units more effectively.
“National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula is better placed, even more than I am, on the issues facing the Senate. There should be no sibling rivalry between the two Houses,” Kingi said while launching the Senate Induction Retreat in Naivasha.
“My key expectation is that we share other useful views and perspectives on how to discharge our Constitutional and leadership roles in and out of the house effectively,” he added.
He further stated that the oversight authority bestowed upon the Senate allowed by the constitution allowed it to closely monitor, supervise and legislate and all matters pertaining to devolution in the 47 counties.
Relevant Stakeholders were further assured by the Senate speaker that they would be engaged in enacting a mechanism that allowed the senators to discharge their duties in the most effective manner.
“I undertake to engage with all relevant stakeholders including government agencies concerned with a view to putting in place a system that ensures members are sufficiently facilitated”.
He additionally stated that the Parliamentary Service Commission was established with an aim of assisting in the effective functioning of parliament legislation , representation , scrutiny, and formation of government.
He further elaborated the key roles of the senate which include debating matters of national importance exercising budget control, appointing and supervising office holders and ensuring the welfare of members.
He further added that the senators will benefit from the induction programme stating that equip Senators with knowledge that is essential in discharging their mandate
