Kenyan caregiver Irene Mbugua killed by mental patient in the UK
Ms Mbugua, who was described as a hard-working single mother of four, had been living in the UK for the last two years and was employed by a care giving agency.
In a bizarre case that has left Kenyans in the United Kingdom in shock, a mentally disabled patient clobbered his Kenyan care giver, Irene Wanjiru Mbugua, to death.
According to West Midland Police in UK, Mbugua, 48, from Mataara in Gatundu North of Kiambu County, died in the tragic incident on Sunday 22nd June 2025 when the male patient she was caring for turned against her, killing her in circumstances still under investigations.
Mbugua, who was described as a hard-working single mother of four, had been living in the UK for the last two years and was employed by a care giving agency.
Her death came as a shock to her family which only got the news one day later after frantic efforts to contact her by the agency failed hours after her shift had ended and she missed filing the mandatory daily work report.
“It was after both family and the agency failed to reach her that the West Midlands Police in Birmingham was involved and discovered her body in the house where she worked on three-week residential shifts with her patient also missing” says a preliminary report from police.
According to police, she had been clobbered on the head with a blunt object and a post-mortem report showed she died of blunt force trauma.
Mbugua’s death is a sad affair since her two young twin sons had only a week arrived in the UK from Kenya and she had been looking forward to reconnect with them in her house at Nottingham where her oldest son 18 year lives.
Her youngest six-year-old son lives in Kenya with relatives. Mbugua’s family is appealing for any assistance as they prepare to bury her.
Her body is lying at Coventry Hospital funeral home, in the UK. Family members and friends will be meeting this weekend for burial arrangement.
