17 dead, 53 hospitalised in a horrific bus-lorry dawn crash along Kisumu-Nairobi highway
At least seventeen people have been confirmed dead and fifty-three others seriously injured following after a fatal crash involving a Super Metro bus and a lorry at the Othoo area near Awasi along the Kisumu-Nairobi highway today at dawn.
Eleven people among them two women, 8 men, a five-years old boy while a total of 53 passengers sustained injuries.
However, six others succumbed to injuries later.
Confirming the incident, Nyanza regional traffic enforcement officer Allan Mwangi said dozens of other passengers were admitted at Ahero Sub-County Hospital and others at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) following the 2:30 am accident.
Reports by the police indicate that the bus, which was heading towards Nairobi from Kampala, Uganda, was trying to overtake when it collided head-on with an oncoming lorry that was carrying rice killing the 11 victims on the spot.
Both vehicles have been towed to Ahero police station.
This comes a few hours after three people lost their lives along the Webuye-Malaba highway on Sunday in a horrific incident involving trailers moving in opposite directions.
The three were two truck drivers and one person believed to be a turn boy of one of the trailers.
