14-year-old boy dies after he was set ablaze by his two brothers in Mandera

A 14-year-old boy who was yesterday doused in petrol and set ablaze by his elder brothers has died hours after police rescued him.

In a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the class seven pupil succumbed to the burn injuries early today morning while undergoing treatment at Mandera County Teaching and Referral hospital.

“The 14-year-old boy had put up a brave fight for his life, but towards 2am this morning he gave up and went to be with the Lord. His distraught father Abdullah Hassan, who couldn’t come to terms with the loss of his beloved son, shed tears of pain and anguish as he reported his death to our officers,” stated DCI.

The boy was set ablaze by his his mischievous brothers identified as Ibrahim Ahmed and Yusuf Ahmed, after he was named as a witness in a case where one of his brothers was accused of stealing a mobile phone.

The boy is said to have been lured to their house before being rolled up in a mattress doused in petrol and set on fire.

“After setting him ablaze, the two brothers immediately went into hiding leaving their little brother for dead,” part of the statement read.

The fire spread so fast across the house attracting the attention of the police who rushed to the scene and rescued the boy who suffered major burns.

Detectives have however arrested the two brothers who are currently at Mandera Police station being processed for the offence of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code.

“We hope that the arrest of the two suspects will bring some semblance of justice to the family and friends of the young boy,” DCI concluded.
