12 killed, over 30 injured in bus fire in India

12 people have been confirmed dead and two critically injured after a bus caught fire today in Nashik city in India’s western state of Maharashtra.

According to an official at the police control room in Nashik, located about 190 kilometers (120 miles) north of Mumbai, the capital of India, more than 30 injured people were being treated at the neighborhood Civil Hospital.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.

According to local media sources, the bus caught fire upon colliding with a diesel tanker.

“Anguished by the bus tragedy in Nashik. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this mishap,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated.

He added that families of the deceased would receive 200,000 rupees ($2,400) each, while the injured would get 50,000 each.

“May the injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected,” he added.

Eknath Shinde, chief minister of Maharashtra, announced separately that the state would pay for the treatment of the injured as well as 500,000 rupees in financial support for the family of the deceased.
