Youths in 12 counties take to the streets in Gen Z demos
Tens of people are reported to have been injured
Thousands of youths defied tight security, blocked roads and warnings against defying laid-down official guidelines to take to the streets of Nairobi as well as other cities and towns in commemoration of the over 60 comrades killed during last year’s crackdown on Gen Z revolt against punitive and levies contained in the Finance Bill.
Apart from Nairobi, which was the main centre of the commemoration where the youths were joined by families of those slain in the June 25, 2024 crackdown and opposition leaders, protests are also taking place in at least 11 other counties, including Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kitui, Kajiado, Makueni, Nyeri, Uasin Gishu, Embu, Homa Bay, Machakos and Nyandarua.
Though the protests were supposed to be peaceful, police have been forced to use teargas canisters to disperse rowdy protesters in Nairobi, Kimathi Street in Nairobi is a focal point of the protests with youths engaging the police in running battles in a cloud of tear gas after they barricaded the street.
Tens of people are reported to have been injured.
In Homa Bay, youths lit a bonfire as the celebrated those killed during last year’s protests.
In Karatina in Nyeri, protesters barricaded the Nyeri-Nairobi highway before police officers stepped in to remove the stones.
