The world will from Wednesday night witness a spectacular display of Geminids Meteor Shower as bright shooting stars stream across the sky in flashing colours.
The showers will be visible across the globe on the night of December 13 and the morning of December 14 depending on location.
In Nairobi, the best time to view the spectacle is between 3am to 5am on Thursday although some regions may see them as early as 9pm on Wednesday.
The star-like objects will shoot at rates as high as 120 meteors an hour although a full moon may dim the display.
Existing records indicate that the first display of the meteors occurred in 1833 over the Mississippi River in the United States.
The displays have grown stronger ever since as gravitational force from Jupiter pull the showers closer to earth.
The Geminid meteors are thought to have originated from an asteroid named 3200 Phaethon that may have collided with another object several hundreds of years ago.
The collision produced a stream of dust and debris that planet earth passes through creating the meteor shower.
The 3200 Phaethon asteroid revolves around the sun every 1.4 years and occasionally comes close to earth although at a safe distance.
The asteroid also passes close to the sun inside Mercury’s orbit.
Get out on time to get used to the darkness to have the best view of the meteors shower display.
