Workers’ strike at City Hall enters second week
Operations remained paralysed at City Hall as Nairobi county workers downed their tools over unpaid April salaries.
Kenyans were unable to receive services as employees protested outside Governor Evans Kidero’s offices chanting his political nemesis Mike Sonko’s name.
The disgruntled workers dumped garbage outside Kidero’s office and vowed not to resume work until their dues are met.
Garbage in other parts of the city also remained uncollected amid uproar from the city populace.
Kenya County Workers Union Secretary-General Bernard Inyangala said employees in the parking and licencing departments had downed their tools including those at City Mortuary.
Nairobi motorists, especially those that has not priory paid parking fess enjoyed the services for free as it emerged that doctors and nurses will join the industrial action today.
County Secretary Robert Ayisi, however, assured the monies had been wired to employees accounts and termed the strike illegal.
He urged workers to be patient as the money was going to reflect in their accounts.
On Tuesday, the county government received an advance of Sh1.021 billion from the Treasury to pay April salaries and avert planned strike that commenced today.
County executive for finance Gregory Mwakanogo told a local daily they had secured the advance following fruitful negotiations with the Treasury.
It is emerged that the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) transferred Sh1 billion from the county government’s account to the taxman’s to cater for arrears, making it difficult to pay April salaries for its 13, 000 workers.
The Kenya County Government Workers Union last week gave the county an ultimatum to pay up the arrears by Tuesday.
