West Pokot nurses call on Uhuru, Kachapin to end ongoing strike
Nurses in West Pokot have asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and area governor Simon Kachapin to suspend their reelection campaigns and intervene in the ongoing strike.
More than 200 nurses took to the streets of Kapenguria town carrying placards written “we may not be special but we are angels on earth” “full implementation of nurses schemes of service” and “ no CBA no going back to work” demanded that their delayed CBA be implemented for them to go back to work.
The nurses said they will meet on the ballot box come August general elections with the president and governors who are busy campaigning and failing to address the strike that has grounded operations in all public hospitals countrywide and putting voters lives at risk.
The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) West Pokot branch chairman, Noel Longorenyang said the buck stops with the two and nurses have a right to demand for their CBA to be implemented.
“Patients are suffering over the CBA dispute that can be sorted out in a few hours, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission and the Council of Governors are playing blame games that are not resulting to call off the strike. The strike has affected services at the hospital terribly,” Longorenyang said.
He said they do not recognize a faction of the union led by embattled Kenya National Union of Nurses national chairman John Bii, and they will only take orders from secretary general Seth Panyako.
