US Senator Chris Coons, delegation in Kenya, set to meet Uhuru, Ruto, Raila

American Senator Chris Coons is in the country and is expected to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta today.

As part of his five-day Africa visit, he is also scheduled to meet president-elect William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga amid a stalemate over the disputed presidential poll results of the just concluded elections.

A delegation from the United States of America (U.S) is in Kenya for a meeting with President-elect William Ruto, his main rival Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Meg Whitman, the US Ambassador to Kenya, says that at the discussion, the delegation will talk about the three shared goals of economic growth, security, and good health.

“Fantastic to welcome the Senator Chris Coons-led delegation to the third stop on a five-day Africa visit! The delegation will meet with conservationists, health providers, and organisations working to empower girls,” Whitman said in a tweet.

According to Whitman, Coons will also visit with groups fighting to empower girls as well as environmentalists and healthcare professionals.

The meetings come at a time when Raila has disputed the declaration of his main rival, Ruto, as the President-elect, saying the electoral commission unlawfully announced the results.

Ruto was declared President-elect by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, having garnered 50.49 per cent of the valid votes cast against Raila’s 48.85 per cent.

The U.S has so far not congratulated President-elect Ruto but the Embassy has commended the active participation of Kenya’s political parties, civil societies, and citizens in shaping robust discussions throughout the campaign period.

“We applaud the efforts of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, security forces, and all electoral institutions to organise a peaceful and orderly voting and counting process,” the Embassy said.
