United opposition will field joint presidential candidate to face Ruto, Gachagua affirm
Former Deputy President and leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Rigathi Gachagua has reaffirmed that the United Opposition will field a single presidential candidate in the next general election, dismissing claims of internal divisions within the coalition.
Speaking during public engagements in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, the former Deputy President insisted that the opposition remains united and focused on unseating President William Ruto.
He alleged that some individuals within the coalition are working with government operatives to create the impression of disunity.
“There are people being used to spread propaganda that we are divided, but the truth is that our unity is intact,” Gachagua said. “Whichever candidate emerges victorious will be supported by all others.”
He assured supporters that the opposition will rally behind a single flagbearer after a structured nomination process, adding that he is personally ready to step aside if another candidate is selected.
“I am prepared to support whoever is chosen. Our goal is bigger than individual ambition,” he added.
Gachagua also cautioned opposition members against making unsubstantiated claims that could weaken the alliance, urging them to remain focused on building a credible alternative government.
He maintained that the coalition’s nomination exercise, scheduled for Saturday, would be free and fair.
At the same time, he took aim at the government, accusing it of attempting to undermine the opposition through covert tactics.
He further made unverified claims regarding regional political dynamics, referencing remarks by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on youth activism and alleging external political influence involving President Ruto.
Turning to the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election, Gachagua urged residents, particularly young voters, not to sell their national identity cards, accusing the ruling side of attempting to manipulate the electoral process.
“Do not allow yourselves to be used. Your vote is your voice,” he said.
He was accompanied by several leaders, including Senator Joe Nyutu, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, and Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, who echoed criticism of the government over corruption and economic management.
