Two Mumias Level 4 Hospital employees arrested after receiving Sh200,00 bribe
Complainant's company had supplied the hospital with an X-ray scanner valued at Sh1.4 million

Mumias Level 4 Hospital Supply Chain Officer, William Mmasava, and Biomedical Engineer, Linet Kavaya, are being detained at the Bungoma Police station pending ongoing investigations into allegations of receiving a Ksh 200,000 bribe.
The two were arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) yesterday while soliciting and receiving the money to facilitate payment for medical equipment that had been supplied to the hospital.
“EACC sleuths arrested William Mmasava, a Supply Chain Officer, and Linet Kavaya, a Biomedical Engineer at Mumias Level 4 Hospital in Kakamega County, for soliciting and receiving a bribe of Sh200,000 to facilitate payment for medical equipment lawfully supplied to the hospital,” the anti-corruption commission revealed in a statement to the press.
It added that they launched investigations after receiving reports last week from a complainant whose company had supplied the hospital with an X-ray scanner valued at Ksh 1.4 million.
The hospital had agreed to make payment in three installments and had already settled the first payment of Ksh 500,000 mid-last month.
According to EACC, at the beginning of May, the hospital’s superintendent had also requested a Ksh 400,000 bribe to facilitate Ksh 650,000 payment to the supplier in the second installment payment.
The complainant is said to have met the administrator of the hospital a day after the call with the superintendent, who reiterated the demand made the day before by the superintendent.
“On the 8th of May, the complainant was contacted by Mohammed Munyendo, the Medical Superintendent at the hospital, who allegedly demanded a bribe of Ksh 400,000 to facilitate the release of the second instalment of Ksh 650,000. The following day, the complainant met with Braxides Bunoro, an administrator at the facility, who reiterated the demand,” EACC revealed.
Though the hospital deposited the second installment into the supplier’s KCB account, access to the funds was restricted, and the complainant continued to receive coercive calls from Munyendo, Bunoro, Mmasava and Kavaya, who were all demanding a bribe before the payment could be accessed.
It was then that EACC mounted an operation, resulting in the arrest of the two at the Kenya Commercial Bank, Mumias Branch after receiving the Ksh 200,000 bribe.
“Following the report, EACC investigators mounted an operation on 21st May 2025 that resulted in the arrest of William Mmasava and Linet Kavaya at KCB Mumias branch shortly after they received a bribe of Ksh 200,000 from the complainant,” EACC revealed.
The two suspects were escorted to EACC’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing and were later booked at Bungoma Police Station, where they are being held pending further investigations.
The Commission has reiterated its focus on addressing bribery at service delivery points, as it encouraged members of the public to report any unethical conduct through its toll-free hotline or at any of its regional offices nationwide.
