Twist of events that led to Arshad Shariff’s death
The shooting that led to Arshad Shariff’s death has turned a fresh twist as police now claim that the journalist and his friend Kurram Ahmed opened fire at the GSU officers when they were stopped.
According to a report, the Pakistani journalist and Ahmed shot at the officers after the car was stopped leading to the injury of one of the officers.
According to the police, the officers were responding to reports that a stolen car, a Mercedes Benz had been seen in the area and that they had been dispatched with orders from their inspector on duty to set up the road block in Kamukuru.
According to sources, Arshad and Shariff spent Sunday afternoon at an entertainment complex in the south of Nairobi that also has a shooting range and which is popular among Pakistani gun enthusiasts.
It is believed that they left for Nairobi at around 8pm and when they got to the main road, they were stopped by GSU officers.
The police report on the incident contradicts what was reported yesterday at the Magadi Police Station where it was claimed that Arshad and Kurram defied orders to stop at the roadblock making the officers to shoot at their car.
The police said that the driver (Kurram) was challenged to stop but he defied and opened fire at their officers which triggered them to respond to the vehicle as it sped towards Nairobi.
The officers said that their car was driven for 12 kilometres from the scene before being abandoned in a village.
