Nkaissery vows to deal with rogue politicians before and after polls
Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery has said that the government will deal firmly with politicians who try disrupt peace during and after the August General Election.
The CS said the law will apply to all despite their status or political affiliation.
“We have put in place a proper strategy that will enable citizens exercise their democratic rights. Nobody will be allowed to threaten stability whether from Jubilee or Nasa. Appropriate legal action will be taken,” Nkaissery said.
Nasa leaders have threatened to boycott August polls in protest of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s decision to challenge a court decision which allowed the declaration of presidential votes at the constituency level.
He spoke yesterday while presiding over the awarding of 78 police officers for outstanding service by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
US Ambassador Robert Godec, who attended the ceremony, said the police have a crucial role to play in the elections saying the US government has partnered with Kenyan government in police and military support to ensure peace and security.
Of the 78 officers feted, 14 of them were honoured posthumously.
“I congratulate all the awardees. As the National Police Service, we are committed to secure the citizens of this country and property at all times. I am happy to announce that in the just ended party primaries, in relative terms, it was largely peaceful. We had only 23 serious incidents. Regrettably, two people died in Nairobi,” Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said.
His comments we echoed by the National Police Service Commission chairman Johnstone Kavuludi who said the service had been professionalised and the awards served as a great morale booster.
IPOA chairman Macharia Njeru said they are working with line institutions to ensure there is a professional service working jointly with the community right from the grassroot level.
