Trouble at City Hall as county workers demand their June salaries

Nairobi County Government is at loggerhead with its workers over delay in disbursing the June salaries.

County Secretary Robert Ayisi pleaded with  the Kenya County Government Workers’ Union (KCGWU) in a strategic move  to avert an impeding  crisis facing the cash-strapped City Hall over the salaries.

Dr Ayisi promised the 13,000 employees  that their pay will be released  tomorrow. “We are exploring all avenues to pay the salary by Friday. Your understanding on the same will be highly appreciated,”said Dr. Ayisi.

In a letter to KCGWU secretaries Benson Olianga (Nairobi City Branch) and Boniface Waweru (Nairobi Staff Branch) obtained by the Informer, the county secretary said Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) had frozen City Hall accounts over non remittance of Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

However, Waweru insists  workers will picket on Monday terming Dr. Ayisi request as flimsy and unacceptable.

“We have noted that payment of salaries as enshrined in Labour Practise and Laws has become a thorn in the flesh of workers,” a reply to the county secretary said.

Waweru termed the continued delay to pay salaries and diversion of members deduction as disregard to the contractual agreement.

In May, the Central Bank  at the request of  KRA transferred Sh1.2 billion to clear part of the Sh3 billion the county government owes.
