Tom Okwach’s body retrieved from Abimbo mine seven months later
After a seven-month search, body of Tom Okwach, 25, that got trapped at Abimbo mines near Bondo has finally been recovered.
In December 2021, a shaft collapsed, trapping Okwach and the other nine miners many feet below, capturing him seven months down the line.
Okwach’s remains were found today after a valiant effort by 15 artisanal miners, according to the deceased’s uncle Fredrick Ogunde.
One of the tragedy’s survivors said he had previously reported a quake while within the shaft but had been ignored since he was a novice.
The gold miners were trapped nearly 20 feet from the mining chambers’ entrance, the gold miners were stranded.
The majority of the locals who were aiding the rescue effort eventually became weary.
Okwach’s brother, Steve Aliwa, in part, expressed his joy that his brother’s body had been found and sorrow on another for the remains that had been retrieved.
“Contrary to what we are hearing, no money has come from the county. We have suffered a lot in the last three weeks. We have had to look for money and pay for excavation, buy fuel and food that the volunteer rescuers have been eating. The family is in serious debt,” Aliwa said.
