TikTok, X and Facebook face fresh scrutiny as Govt cracks down on social media abuse

The ministry of Interior and National Administration has indicated a new approach of dealing with social media abuse in the country.

Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo who met stakeholders in the digital sector early today at his offices affirmed Government’s position to protect integrity and responsibility by platform users.

Speaking at the event, the PS said: “There’s need for “immediate and decisive measures” to address the growing misuse of social media in Kenya.”

Omollo in his meeting with the various players urged for consensus on the need to curb misuse of technology. Additionally, the government insists that moving forward; there should be physical presence of key operators who have clients or users in the country.

Channels like TikTok, X, Facebook and LinkedIn are, therefore, expected to set up mandatory physical offices for accountability to end the wave of cyber bullying in new measures expected to stir up reactions.

The Kenya Kwanza Administration has faced a wave of dissidence especially via the open space of the internet. During last year’s protracted battle with the Gen Z resurgence, social media channels like X, Instagram and Facebook were the tools of trade in what almost appeared like a civilian coup.

Amidst the government’s increasing unpopularity especially within the restive youth, it is now anticipated another battle. With increased monitoring, the active social media users will seem cornered. The big businesses like Meta and X will be viewed on their next cause of action given their influence. Already, there is a buzz online about the move which is seen as a new affront to media freedom.

President William Ruto has suffered the vilest attacks touching on his persona and has warned that the misuse of social media by Kenyans online will not be tolerated. His lieutenants have times in number warned the bloggers and other online brigade against trying to create anarchy in the digital spaces.

Kenyans who feel aggrieved by the Kenya Kwanza Administration have gone hard on government have found safe spaces to unleash their anger and disdain virtually. The sitting government has  felt pricked and disrespected.
